The research process for this newsletter was extremely hard. Not because I couldn’t find anything to include but because I was extremely tempted to buy more than a few things on this list. Any other year, I would have entered in my credit card immediately, but tomorrow is when the Dover Street Market Market kicks off and whewwww, am I excited. If you want to go it’s located 866 United Nations Plaza from 10am to 7pm. It’ll run until this Sunday and if it’s anything like the London sale, expect extremely long lines. But trust me, it’ll be worth it: seven years worth of stuff is A LOT OF STUFF. Prices are 70% off the tag for in-house brands aka CdG, Junya, etc. while other designers are 80% off, so you could conceivably find a pair of Prada heels or Miu Miu dress for deep discount. As for me, you know where I’ll be the second I get inside.
A few of my friends are out of town during the sale, much to their dismay, and I know plenty of people are either unable to make it or unwilling to brave the line. While it’s not substitute for the massive archive sale, there are a bunch of really good pieces on sale at the moment. Caveat: the discounts aren’t that deep but hey, it beats paying retail. So, here are 11 pieces I would buy, if I wasn’t blowing my entire budget as we speak:
Skirt-pants!!!!! I could do this with skirts I already own but finding the right pants has been a STRUGGLE. This takes all the guesswork out of things as an all-in-one. Unfortunately there’s only a size medium left but it’s your lucky day if you fit that. Also, I don’t foresee any deeper discounts beyond 40%, if only because I haven’t seen this piece at many other retailers, so my guess is that it either wasn’t bought or sold quickly.
This is a pretty good price for a white blouse — I’ve seen fast fashion garbage cost this much. The big, flying nun-esque shoulders might turn some people off but it’s the main selling point to me. I love the idea of wearing layered under a pinafore for a twisted schoolgirl look that CdG is very well known for but also over these shorts that are also on sale and very well-priced at $249!
Bows of all sorts are everywhere at the moment, a trend that I actually enjoy greatly when done correctly, like in the case of this button down. The oversized tie is a nice way to mix up wardrobe basics and again, the price is pretty good.
Speaking of bows, this skirt has puffy bows at the hem which is another way of wearing the trend without having it feel twee. It’s not as heavily marked down as the other pieces here but allegedly you get another 10% off when you check out so it’ll cost just under $800 - not the cheapest of the bunch but fairly decent for CdG.
I really thought this was a Noir Kei Ninomiya piece because of all the gathered tulle but it’s not — in the end it’s all the same I guess. Either way this cropped jacket would be so fun to wear in the fall or spring, especially with slouchy jeans.
The jagged back and swing shape!!! 60% off!!!! You really can’t have too many asymmetrical blazers, I swear.
Here’s one more blazer that is also really really good — there are slits in the arm pits plus more deconstruction in the back that almost resemble wings. I honestly can’t choose between the two, they’re both versatile and cool.
This is the definition of a low effort, high reward dressing skirt.
Lately I’ve been into sheer pieces so I noticed this lace blouse immediately. Yes, you can probably find other similar tops but the big sleeves is what sets this piece apart from the others out there, it gives it more of a unique silhouette. The styling also sold me — little bralette and black trousers is a perfect going out when you don’t go out look.
But if that’s too revealing and you want a lacy top that you can wear a proper bra under, this white one is a nice balance of sheer and covered.
If you’re a size small (and to be honest, this small is relative because it’s an elastic waist), here’s another really well-priced skirt that will take very little effort to style.
With that, see you on Sunday morning for a special newsletter featuring a reader question on what to wear to a very important business trip in France. Whether you also have the same issue or a comparable work problem, hopefully this will help. And if you have a question, feel free to email me and I’ll answer it in an upcoming newsletter!
